Cambridge hosts East Anglian Shield

This year the East Anglian Shield matches were all held on Sunday 9th September at the Perse School for Boys in Cambridge, with current Shield holders Cambridge Tigers hosting the event.

The competition pits the top four teams from Norwich and Cambridge against each other. This year the competing teams were Norwich City 1 and 2, Stingers, Dragons, Cambridge City, Phoenix, Kites, and Tigers. Pool games were held in the morning, with play offs in the afternoon. Tigers easily won their three pool matches against Norwich City 2, Cambridge Phoenix, and Stingers, only conceding four goals in the process, to win them a place in the final. Meanwhile in the other group, Norwich City 1, current Norwich league champions, also won all their matches to reach the final.

Cambridge Tigers versus Norwich City 1 in the final set up an interesting match, with both teams fielding several National League players, who will be doing battle in Division One come November. In a close and tense first half, Tigers had the upper hand and went into half time 3-2 up. They went on to dominate the second half, with some patient attacking play and strong defence, so despite two late goals from Norwich City, Tigers won 9-4, winning the East Anglian Shield for the fourth successive year. In fact, Tigers remains the only name on the Shield!

In the battle for 4th and 3rd positions Cambridge City drew against Norwich City 2, so the game went to penalties, with Norwich City 2 the eventual victors. The other play offs pitted Phoenix against Dragons for 8th/7th and Stingers against Kites 6th/5th.

The final results were, in traditional reverse order:
8th Phoenix
7th Dragons
6th Stingers
5th Kites
4th Cambridge City
3rd Norwich City 2
2nd Norwich City 1
1st Cambridge Tigers.
